World of Warcraft Director Starts a New Project at Blizzard

The upcoming WoW games may never be the same as longtime game director, Tom Chilton has announced that he is leaving WoW and moving on to another project within the same company, Blizzard Entertainment. This departure might disappoint some of the fans, but it might turn out to be something positive for the game on the long run and he will still be working for the same company so he might act as an advisor for the new director. Chilton said that the latest expansion for the game, Legion, is the culmination of more than 10 years of hard work with one of the best development teams and that he is bidding farewell and moving on to a new adventure. He also assured fans that the future of the WoW games is bright and that he just as excited to see what comes next. You might ask who will replace him? It seems that the lead game designer for WoW: Legion, Ion Hazzikostas, will take his place. Hazzikostas has been working for Blizzard since 2008 and became Assistant Game Director in 2015, under Tom Chilton. As for that other project that Chilton said he was working on, not much is known. Although fans are aching to find out something, anything related to it. Some Blizzard games fans believe that he is working on a completely new title. Given his experience, it’s possible that he is working on a new MMO game. Hopefully, this project will not go down in flames like one of the MMO games from Blizzard did. You might remember it as Project Titan which was repurposed to create the Overwatch game. It would be something though, to see if the upcoming WoW extensions and games will differ from the old ones. If they don’t, then it’s all good, but if they do, they better be great!

They’ve added tons of modern graphical effects to the engine, doubled the model detail on nearly every NPC and creature in the game, and have created new animations for every class ability in the game-there is no “it aged well” when it’s a different looking and playing game.

Will they ever release/work on a current gen WoW someday? I’d be throwing 15$/month at least for a year for it. But not for a “it aged well though” 10 years old game.

I came along after Burning, but before WotL. Now when i try to go back, it had its moment for me. My guild no longer exists, i dont have the time to play that way and playing a sped up version isnt what i want as is.

Well Ion was lead designer on legion-its well received and is likely going to be the blueprint for content going forward. Kinda meaningless at this point to worry about TBC when the current game bears next to no resemblance to it.

My worry is that he came on long after vanilla, Burning Crusade, and maybe even Wrath (if I remember right?), and maybe he didn’t play the original game and might not understand why certain aspects of it were so appealing.

I know that’s a little paranoid, but it’s like realizing that there are people playing WoW today that weren’t old enough to really play pre-Cata and will never understand why the game was so beloved then. I’d say we’re truly losing something here.

Nah, their financials don’t really bear that out-keep in mind there are all the paid account services (name changes, realm changes etc), shop mounts and pets, selling the game time token etc.

The game still makes a monstrous amount of money year round (and I’d have to check/see just how they phrased it, but I recall in one of their 2015 financials they mentioned the game basically having its highest gross income ever due to all the aforementioned stuff, and that was during WoD)

Even when those part timers cancel the accounts; the player base still dwarfs almost everything else in the genre. Still bringing in lots and lots of money.

It seems to me that they now make their money off this game in surges. From people that have left the game after a previous expansion, then come back when a new one comes out, pay for the expansion and then play for a month or two until they’ve seen all the content…then cancel their accounts again.
