Dota 2 Major Update – Monkey King Introduced

Valve, the creators of Dota 2 have been teasing this update since back in August, and what stirred players the most was the addition of a new character that’s called Monkey King. This update is quite large and even if the spotlight is on the Monkey King, the update also includes a bunch of new features. One of the most highly anticipated features is the complete interface and HUD overhaul and right now we will go over the biggest Dota 2 changes to be brought by the 7.00 Patch.

  • HUD

The user interface has received a complete overhaul and it has been optimized to be more user friendly. One of the most important aspects of the game is the game map and the HUD has been altered so that players can pay more attention to the map. The hero console has also been changed and its frame now occupies a smaller space thus making space for the latest Hero Talents and Backpack slots. The way the game will be played is completely changed now that players are allowed to carry three additional items in their backpacks.

  • Monkey King

Players that love being carriers should be happy to know that the Monkey King fits into that category. The new character has fun abilities that allow players to disable other players and escape from bad situation at ease. On the other hand, the character’s ultimate is not meant for escaping but for attacking instead. Using the Monkey King’s ultimate players will spawn a legion of monkeys that will instantly attack other enemy characters.

  • New Hero Talent Trees

The way the new hero talent trees work is that players will now be able to choose hero talents only at levels 10, 15, 20 and 25. This change is forcing players to put more though into their picks and it’s definitely going to change the meta.

Kinda reminds me of Ozo from VainGlory, which is a MOBA as well and all.

Bear in mind I wasn’t thinking specifically “oh, they’re gonna take Monkey King”. I mention this only because the coincidence amused me.

That said, I don’t doubt they will copy ideas from other LPGs, including HoN. After all, if you’re going to steal, may as well steal from the best 😉

As I understand it Sun Wukong is in practically every moba these days, in addition to, you know, a well-known character of a mythology. Wouldn’t call that jacking HoN exactly.

I also hear that he’s a hero that the concept for a character based on Sun Wukong dates back to the original Dota, though they never actually released it.

Nvm he stopped working for S2 Games by then. Maybe it was just coincidence

Actually the Dota2’s lead developer Icefrog was working for S2 Games on HoN too. HoN was supposed to be the Dota 1 successor before he was approched by Valve. That’s why the both games were so identical in the beginning. Considering that Sun Wukong was teased in Dota 1 in 2013, around the same time he came out in HoN I’d guess it was one of his ideas.

In the comment thread about that underworld guy that was recently released somebody wondered aloud where Valve would go in terms of new heroes now that all the original roster was tapped. I thought to myself “well, they’ll probably just start jacking HoN characters”. Didn’t realize it would happen so quickly.

It seems like to be a true MOBA you must have a Monkey King hero.

It would be sweet if they made a hero like HoN’s Electrician, too.

There’s a Monkey King in every game. Even Warframe.

Actually it’s only refering to Sun Wukong being the first new hero for Dota 2. All the heroes who were introduced before were ported from Dota 1. Title is indeed very misleading though

I think that’s sarcasm in the headline? Sun Wukong is also available in Smite.

IIRC Monkey King and Drunken Master came in a pair when they were relased and around that time there was talk of another game who had a Monkey King char in development, but I don’t remember which one it was.

I’m not sure I’d exactly call it original. Monkey King was an available choice in Heroes of Newerth and, while I don’t keep up with League of Legends, I wouldn’t be very surprised to find that they had their own iteration of him in their game, as well.
